Excavation in Syracuse, Davis County
Syracuse is on the west edge of Davis County, close to the Great Salt Lake and the road out to Antelope Island. Much of it was farmland not long ago, and new subdivisions have been filling in those fields. Fields that grew crops a few years ago are now streets of new homes, and some parcels are still waiting their turn.
That history matters for excavation. The soil out here is mostly fine lake-bottom clay and silt, and groundwater can be shallow, especially in spring. A basement dig that would be routine up on the east bench takes more thought in Syracuse, and the backfill has to be placed and compacted properly so it does not settle against the house later. Spring is when the water table is usually highest, so the time of year can matter as much as the depth of the dig.
A lot of the work follows the growth. Builders need lots cleared of brush, old fill and leftover farm debris, then graded into pads. Homeowners in newer neighborhoods often move in with a bare backyard that has to be leveled and sloped before landscaping goes in. On properties that still have some acreage, old fences, sheds and junk piles come out to open the ground back up. Trenches for drain lines also come up here, where flat ground leaves water with nowhere to go.
